Higher Consciousness Skill Series: “Can You Observe Without Reacting?”

    You may have heard that we’re on the verge of an evolutionary leap. We have the opportunity to transcend some old ways of being that have gotten us to where we are but are now holding us back. In our upcoming posts, we’ll explore higher consciousness skills that can empower you to make that leap into your greater potential.

    The primary skill is self-observation. Self-observation is the ability to observe your intentions, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and actions without reacting to them. For example, if you feel a craving for something or an urge to lash out at someone, instead of being swept up in that, you pause in that moment to be more present within the experience. You seek to understand what is happening, so you can make conscious choices based on what is best for you and those around you.

    When you self-observe, you are present with what is going on inside you and how that plays out in the interactions around you—you occupy a wider perspective. You are actively engaged in what is happening and yet able to watch yourself at the same time. You are proactively present rather than being a passive victim carried away by circumstances and events.

    Self-observation is actually a fairly high-level skill. It is the ability to merge different forms of attention into a higher-level, whole-brain state of consciousness.

    We’ll explore these different forms of attention in tomorrow’s post. My suggestion for today is to be an observer in three ways. Look at what you are doing, listen to what you are saying (internally and externally), and feel where that comes from inside.
