Energy Booster #7: Waking Up Your Brain

    It’s common knowledge that we use but a small fraction of our brain capacity. But did you know that that fact affects your mood and energy level?

    You know how excited you get when you learn something new? You’re empowered with new knowledge and skills and that feels good. It builds your confidence. It also creates new neural connections and networks in your body and brain and that increases energy flow.

    So, as the saying goes, make it a point to “learn something new every day.” You’ll not only sharpen your mind, improve your memory, and find it easier to process new information, you’ll also find yourself happier, more inspired, and alive with energy.

    If you’re stuck in a rut, or low on energy, or needing to make any life shift, start by learning something new. It can be anything that interests you, even if you don’t how it can “be useful” or “amount to anything.” You don’t have to put that kind of pressure on it, unless it inspires you to do that.

    For example, I’ve taken on the project of learning to speak Chinese. Instead of listening to the radio, I listen to Chinese language CDs in the car to and from work. I have a natural interest in it from studying qigong meditation and t’ai chi, so there’s a draw there. I’ve also scheduled a trip to China in a couple years. Traveling is a great way to stimulate the brain and boost your energy. In this case, it also serves to keep me on task with my learning project.

    What would you like to learn? Where would you like to travel? Though the task may seem daunting, put it in your schedule to learn something new about your subject or your destination every day. I think you’ll find that this simple action lights up your energy in all areas of your life.
